Easter

16/04/14

Easter Week or Semana Santa as it is called in Spain is one of the most important celebrations of the year in this country. Starting on Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) with a procession in which locals carry olive and palm branches which they later keep at home to ward off evil, the celebrations culminate on Easter Monday (Lunes de Pascua). During the week the island comes alive with processions, one of the most impressive being the Devallament on Good Friday (re-enactment of Christ being taken down from the cross). On Easter Sunday is the procession of the Encontre (re-enactment of Christ's reunion with the Virgin Mary after his resurrection). Spain has historically been a devoutly Catholic nation and the Easter celebrations have a deeply religious significance for the Spaniards but they still manage to inject a lot of colour and fun with the traditional Fira Del Ram starting at the beginning of March. This temporary fairground set up in Palma attracts 1000's of visitors every year. One thing is certain; if you have never celebrated Semana Santa before you will never forget the experience.
